I traveled to Syros again to volunteer at the International Film Festival of Syros,
experiencing five days filled with people and films.
Jay says:
The unique position of Syros in the Cyclades and the Aegean Sea provided an opportunity to witness a pan-Mediterranean film festival. I will remember especially the almost desolate yet beautifully dramatic dry landscapes which were perfectly paired with the screenings.
Of course there will always be questions raised on the topic of how far contemporary cinema is willing to go in terms of simulating reality or demonstrating a perceived ‘truth’, but it seems Syros is a good place to conduct this discussion due to its location. There was also an importance given both to the aesthetics and content of the screenings, which had an emphasis on the political atmosphere of Greece and its islands.
On a final note, the views of the mountains in the north, which I saw whilst crossing on the ferry, appears endless to the eye. Indeed it’s a place that I’ll remember along with many people I met whilst on the island.
Last night in Syros we stayed until the sunrise, we danced So Long, Marianne and we jumped naked in the water.
